Day 2: Peak Jay

Tuesday, August 6, 2019

Another picture perfect day for hiking. First up was Jay Peak. It’s a ski resort so the climb to the top was actually up a ski trail. Except for the elevation gain, it was easy hiking going up. Beautiful views from the summit. Not a soul around. Glorious.

The descent was pretty brutal. Reminded me of the White Mountains.

I climbed a few more smaller mountains - Gilpin Mountain, Domey's Dome, Buchanan Mountain - and arrived at Hazen’s Notch Shelter around 3:00 p.m. I’m trying to keep my mileage down so I don’t wreck myself but it was a pretty strenuous 8.6 miles nonetheless.

Around 6:00 p.m. it started raining while I was making dinner but I was able to finish my repast and hunker down for the night. It was windy and noisy but my tent held up really well. I bought it right before this trip so I was glad it passed the test. But the rain that night was a harbinger of things to come...

Total miles for the day: 8.6
